« Hip-hop don't stop » : dans l'objectif de Maï Lucas

Join us all summer long on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin to delve back into the genesis of French hip-hop through this photographic series by Maï Lucas.

Since her beginnings in 1986, photographer Maï Lucas has observed the emergence of hip-hop in France, at a time when no one imagined that this culture could become a major movement, let alone transmit its codes to society as a whole.

A first-generation Franco-Vietnamese, she immediately identified with this rebellious spirit and befriended many musicians, graffiti artists, and dancers, pioneers of this culture made by, and for, young people.

As an actor and witness to this new wave, she gradually developed her own artistic vision in contact with this unprecedented effervescence that transformed Paris into a crossroads of the suburbs, a true social and cultural melting pot where the street was celebrated.

The photographs she took then, to be discovered all summer long along the Canal Saint-Martin, now serve as a means of transmission and forever fix collective memory by offering us a dive, as powerful as it is personal, into the genesis of French hip-hop.

This exhibition is freely accessible, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, on the fences of the Jardin Villemin-Mahsa Jîna Amini (Quai de Valmy side).
