The Blackbyrds, iconic jazz-funk and R&B group of the 1970s formed under the aegis of legendary trumpeter Donald Byrd. The Blackbyrds were at the forefront of jazz fusion, R&B, funk, and gospel in the 1970s, pushing the boundaries of popular Black music.
Founded by legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd in 1973, the group enjoyed success with tracks such as the Grammy-nominated "Walking in Rhythm", "Happy Music", and the iconic "Rock Creek Park", as well as "Do It Fluid", "Supernatural Feeling", the Grammy-nominated "Unfinished Business", "Time is Movin'", "Dreaming About You", and "Flyin' High", among many others.
The Blackbyrds have been sampled by countless hip-hop artists. Under the direction of original drummer and singer Keith Killgo, the group continues to record, tour, and perform worldwide.
With eight successful albums published for Fantasy from 1974 to 1980, The Blackbyrds became a source of inspiration in the late 1970s and early 1980s in England, and are sampled by Gang Starr, Full Force, Massive Attack, Ice Cube, Big Daddy Kane.
The Blackbyrds are also to be considered one of the pillars of blaxploitation. B. King, Mandrill, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins.
