Overview

At the crossroads of generations and mediums, the exhibition "Couleurs de Corée" invites us to perceive colour as a universal language, capable of transmitting the memory of a culture while illuminating the realities of today and the contours of our future.

Colour permeates all aspects of life and, depending on the culture, takes on multiple meanings.

In Korea, five fundamental colours – white, black, red, yellow, and blue – are associated with the five elements and the principle of yin and yang, embodying a unique aesthetic deeply rooted in history and culture.

In art, both traditional and contemporary, colour is not merely a formal concern: it acts as a vector of meaning, connecting works to a collective imagination, to ancient symbols, and to a diversity of cultural interpretations.

The exhibition "Couleurs de Corée, Lumière sur l’art contemporain coréen", presented at the Centre Culturel Coréen on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea, proposes a dialogue between tradition and contemporary creation by bringing together works with formal proximities.

Through the creations of 34 artists – from grand masters to young talents – covering a wide spectrum of practices, from painting to sculpture, from photography to installation, and even digital art, the exhibition celebrates the colours of Korea and invites contemplation of works through the lens of lasting and timeless criteria, thus offering a renewed perspective on the challenges of our era and the prospects for tomorrow.

Among the major figures presented are LEE Ungno, KIM Tschang-Yeul, PARK Seo-Bo, HA Chong-Hyun, and many others, who have marked the history of art with the strength and singularity of their aesthetic.

Alongside them, contemporary artists in full effervescence – such as Yeesookyung, KIM Yunchul, Anicka YI, Jin MEYERSON – contribute to enriching the art scene with works in vibrant colours.
