How to evoke the feeling of fear in comics? How to establish a sense of dread through this narrative art form? Through the panels of Deryn Du, Guillaume Sorel offers answers to these questions. In the album Deryn Du, Guillaume Sorel explores the strange events affecting a village in Wales. Far from the grey English moors of 19th-century gothic novels, here the landscape is bright and green. The tension of the narrative builds each day as the hero seeks to unravel the horrors that occurred during the night. To guide the reader through the sustained rhythm of the story, Guillaume Sorel constantly renews the composition of his panels: he moves from large contemplative frames to successions of small panels, punctuating the characters' movements and emotions. Guillaume Sorel thus reveals a compositional will inspired by cinema to serve the narrative and keep the reader on the edge of their seat. A great film enthusiast, Guillaume Sorel has also created a series of illustrations as a tribute to the works of David Lynch, some originals of which he will present at this exhibition. ABOUT GUILLAUME SOREL

Guillaume Sorel, born in Cherbourg, quickly discovered the world of comic books. His attraction to drawing led him to obtain a BEP in civil engineering, before entering the School of Applied Arts in Lyon and then the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He produced his first professional illustrations for role-playing game companies and signed his first cover for Presse Pocket in 1991. The same year, he made his debut in the world of comic books with L’Ile des Morts and with series such as Mens Magna or Typhaon. Passionate about literature, in the 2010s he adapted Le Horla and Macbeth Roi d’Ecosse. Deryn Du is his latest album, published by Dupuis. He is currently working on a new adaptation project of the novel Malpertuis.
