" Throughout prehistory, humans have forged multiple connections with coastal environments, from the first African shores to the edges of the Mediterranean, depending on the era and the continent.

This exhibition offers a synthesis of the long history linking prehistoric peoples to seas and oceans, from the use of raw materials originating from coastlines, dating back to the Early Palaeolithic, to the arrival of Neolithic peoples in the south of France by sea route.

Thanks to major archaeological discoveries in recent decades, this history is now revealed with new clarity.

These advancements bear witness to an increasingly advanced and diversified use of coastlines: tool shaping, fishing practices, manufacture of personal ornaments, and even artistic inspirations, as evidenced, for example, by the drawings in the Cosquer cave or the conch shell from the Marsoulas cave.

Research in this field continues and resonates with current issues surrounding seas and oceans: better understanding our past, in order to better grasp our future. Exhibition conceived by the Musée de Préhistoire de Terra Amata and adapted by the Musée de l’Aurignacien.
