Montaigne : Les Essais

A classical theatre show staged at the Petit Théâtre in Bordeaux, whose title refers to Montaigne's Les Essais, a major collection of reflections from the French Renaissance.

This classical theatre show takes as its starting point Les Essais by Michel de Montaigne, a collection of reflections first published from 1580, in which the author explores his thoughts on death, reading, friendship and human nature. The title pairs the author's name with that of his work, indicating that the play is grounded in this major text of French literature.

In the theatre, audiences can expect a performance centred on the spoken word and the actors' craft, in the tradition of classical theatre. The form of the Essais, made up of digressions, anecdotes and meditations, offers material that lends itself well to the stage. This show is aimed at audiences curious about literature and theatre who want to hear the language of Montaigne brought to life by the voice.

The performance takes place at the Petit Théâtre, located in Bordeaux, which includes theatre shows in its programme.
