« Sur la pointe des pieds », de Noémie Lecampion

Documentary photographer Noémie Lecampion plunges us into the heart of the reality of autism spectrum disorders in adults. A sensitive and necessary exhibition, to be discovered for free at the Mairie du 10e.

When we hear “autism”, we first think of children or adolescents. However, many adults are diagnosed late with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), and it is these individuals that documentary photographer Noémie Lecampion has chosen to highlight today. The exhibition Sur la pointe des pieds thus reveals the reality of these invisible disabilities through the daily lives of adults aged 20 to 60. This photographic series, the result of several years of patient work, underlines the singularity of each journey while bringing forth a common discourse. The photographs are frontal, without any staging, to better draw us into the intimacy of the subjects photographed. To allow such proximity, Noémie Lecampion used an analogue photographic process, far from the flashy immediacy of social networks, and allowed each person to choose the moment of visual capture using a release bulb. Thus, the photographed subjects are masters of their image, as if to better affirm their existence and decide how they are viewed, without artifice, far from the clichés and labels that many still tend to attach to them. In France, an estimated 700,000 people are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but a large number of individuals remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and must cope with what constitutes an everyday disability, still too often the subject of mockery or incomprehension. The exhibition Sur la pointe des pieds sheds light on this reality to challenge preconceived ideas, and celebrates the richness of our differences with as much sincerity as poetry by interweaving portraits and testimonies.
