The contemporary counterpoint honours Vija Celmins, the artist who, since the late 1960s, has developed a very precise body of work focused on surfaces: ocean, desert, sky or snow, which she calls "impossible images", devoid of spatial markers, immersing the viewer in infinity.
Her works, created between 1971 and 2000, utilise various techniques (drawing, painting, printmaking, wood engraving) and play on flatness and illusion. Presented in the pronaos and the contemporary room of the museum, these pieces engage in a dialogue with Monet's Nymphéas and invite a mindful and silent experience.
