Overview
A lecture by historian Jeanne Barnicaud
Jeanne Barnicaud will share her ongoing research into the practices and imagery of female tattooing in the 19th and 20th centuries.
This work aims to capture the nuances of a form of expression (and, at times, of art) which, contrary to received ideas, was not confined to sailors, soldiers, prisoners and prostitutes.
The in-depth analysis of scientific studies, press articles and prison registers suggests a far wider adoption of this form of personal expression. Female tattooing was practised to enhance appearance, to adopt counter-cultural codes and to assert an identity.
While it was sometimes endured or suggested, it was also an opportunity to express one's individuality voluntarily. Jeanne Barnicaud is a lecturer-researcher and doctoral student at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
The Comité d'Histoire de la Ville de Paris, the association Histoire et vies du 10e and the Médiathèque Françoise Sagan invite you to a lecture series on the theme of detention, in order to complement, enrich and broaden the scope of the exhibition Prisonnières, les dernières années de la prison Saint-Lazare (1919-1932) presented at the médiathèque.
