Book Club des Aliennes : « Poupées Roumaines » de Marie Khazrai

Discover the book Poupées Roumaines in the presence of its author, Marie Khazrai, a novelist and coach for women leaders. Her first novel offers a different take on incest and seeks a truth that discourse conceals. The sentences shift in every direction in an attempt to bring that truth to light. The meeting centres on the author's work and her book, with readings of extracts and a time for exchange and questions with the audience.

On stage, her foot breaks and her career comes to a halt, leaving her without a compass. Bad luck? Fate? The compass needle, gone haywire, still points to the same north: Romania, her mother's homeland. So it's settled. She will make the journey there, to the farm where her grandmother and aunt live. For six days, she will investigate. But in this village ravaged by communism, she is led up the garden path. Poisoners, ogres, vampires: confidences turn into tales, and a century of Romanian history joins the dance. For these women seem to be connected by one thing. It is called savagery, and it lives within each of their bodies. TW: intra-family violence, incest, sexual violence, violence against women, family trauma.

Context of violence and persecution under the communist regime.
