Cezanne et les peintres, une histoire d’influences(s)

A dive into Cezanne’s influence on 20th-century art

Picasso said of Paul Cezanne that he was “our father, all of us”. Although he remained little known during his lifetime, ending his days in seclusion in Aix-en-Provence, he is today regarded as a giant of painting and the father of modern art.

On the occasion of the exhibition-event “Cezanne et nous” at the Grand Palais in Paris, from 23 September 2026 to 17 January 2027, Éditions Citadelles et Mazenod are publishing an original, previously unpublished book which, in a manner both lively and well documented, traces the connections between the “master” and the major artists of the late 19th to the 21st century, from Pissarro to Peter Doig.

The Bibliothèque Forney invites the author, Laure-Caroline Semmer, to share her research on the Aix painter and to give listeners keys to understanding the exhibition and, more broadly, to better appreciate the founding and lasting influence of the Aix master on 20th-century art.

• The speaker, Laure-Caroline Semmer, teaches art history, notably on the Paris campus of New York University.

She is the author of several books, including Lire la peinture de Cezanne (2006), Cezanne, une histoire française (2011) and Pionnières, ces femmes qui ont fait l’art (2022). - Event organised in partnership with Éditions Citadelles & Mazenod.
