Overview
A talk on the brother of Clotilde de Vaux and former mayor of Chatillon, Maximilen Marie.
Talk: The Complete Picture of Maximilien MARIE, younger brother of Clotilde de Vaux, graduate of the École Polytechnique, mathematician, thinker and mayor of Châtillon. 1819-1891. By Françoise Decoursier-Sandoz, lecturer.
A remarkable and controversial figure in the mathematical circles of his day, Maximilien MARIE, Polytechnicien, scientific mind and historian, had a colourful career well worth exploring.
Various portraits will present him through the lens of his unusual family origins, his studies and his early links with Comte, his contributions to Larousse, and his prolific output on the history of mathematics, among other things.
The talk will address the undeniably major role played by the younger brother of Clotilde de Vaux, the inspiration behind the master of positivism. Finally, it will reveal the commitment of the civic leader, mayor of Châtillon. A multifaceted perspective!
