Overview
The Korean Cultural Center and the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage are co-organizing a series of lectures dedicated to the Buddhist culture of the Silla kingdom and the recent results of archaeological excavations.
Heir to a millennium of history, the Kingdom of Silla shaped a large part of Korea's spiritual and artistic heritage through a unique Buddhist art. This series explores various aspects of Silla's history: from Buddhist philosophy to the daily life of its inhabitants, including exchanges between East and West along the Silk Road.
Monday, October 5, 2026 at 7:00 PM - "Seokguram and Silla Buddhism"
An artificial cave temple dating from the 8th century, Seokguram embodies the essence of Buddhism in the royal capital of Silla. This lecture analyzes its structure and ideological context, while reinterpreting its unique place in the global history of Buddhist art. It also offers a glimpse into the lives of monks and their spiritual practices around Mount Namsan, where numerous sacred sites are concentrated.
Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at 7:00 PM - "Life and Death of the Inhabitants of Silla"
Based on objects unearthed at Wolseong, the former royal palace of Silla, this lecture highlights the daily life of the period as well as exchanges along the Silk Road. It also presents recent excavation results from wooden-chamber tombs under stone cairns (dolmuji deotneol mudeom), a burial type specific to Silla. Through the experimental reconstruction of an ancient tomb and the recreation of funerary rites, it reveals the beliefs and practices related to death at that time.
By tracing the history and memory of this thousand-year-old kingdom, the audience will be able to rediscover the historical roots and richness of Korean heritage through the example of Silla.
