Overview
From the post-war era to the present day, this lecture retraces the major evolutions of Japanese photography and the diversity of perspectives that have shaped its history.
As part of the Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris's Focus on new Japanese photography, this event offers an overview of Japanese photography from the post-war period to the present day. Through the technological, aesthetic and social changes that have marked the medium, it highlights the richness and diversity of the approaches developed by Japanese photographers over the decades.
The lecture will bring together Miho Odaka, curator of the exhibition Five Views – Emerging Japanese Photography, and Héloïse Conésa, head of the photography department and heritage curator for contemporary photography at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Their dialogue will provide a better understanding of the transformations that have shaped contemporary photography in Japan and the issues driving a new generation of artists today.
[This event resonates with the exhibition "Five Views – Emerging Japanese Photography", presented at MCJP from 6 October to 14 November 2026, in partnership with the T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO. The project has also been awarded the Bicentenary of Photography label by the Ministry of Culture and is part of the official programme celebrating 200 years of photography.]
