Overview
From 10 October 2026, the Muséum de Bordeaux is presenting Félins, an exhibition designed by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle and adapted for Bordeaux.
What do a tiger, a lynx, a cheetah, a caracal and even the cat that shares our homes have in common? They all belong to the same family: the felids. From 10 October 2026, the Muséum de Bordeaux is presenting Félins, an exhibition designed by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle and adapted for Bordeaux. Through taxidermy specimens, anatomical pieces, scientific illustrations and interactive media, the exhibition invites visitors to discover the diversity of this iconic animal family.
Diverse species, singular family
Today, felids form a relatively homogeneous family of 38 species. Their evolution has been accompanied by a high degree of specialisation in predation, with particular adaptations among carnivores. While felines are relatively physiologically homogeneous, the family displays a wide variety of sizes, coats and lifestyles. This diversification is the result of adaptations to the various environments in which they live. Spanning over 300m², the exhibition showcases this diversity through a panorama of all 38 current species. 23 of them are represented by taxidermy specimens, allowing the public to gauge the full extent of this animal family.
Perfect hunters?
Retractable claws, fangs, coats designed for camouflage: the exhibition illustrates the anatomical assets and physical performances of felines that make them exceptional predators. Osteological mounts, the reconstruction of a predation scene and scientific illustrations help explain the mechanisms at work during the hunt.
Powerful animals... but vulnerable
Being an exceptional predator does not protect felines from environmental upheavals. Many species are now facing threats linked in particular to the loss of their habitats and human activities. The exhibition looks at their current situation.
