Overview

From September 2026 to July 2027, the Bibliothèque départementale des Bouches-du-Rhône toured the department's library network following in the footsteps of two major figures of the collective imagination: the witch and the wild man.

It was a rich cultural season featuring 140 events and cultural offerings. Now, it is setting down its bags in Marseille, at the Archives and Departmental Library building, for a new adventure.

The exhibition WE, Witch & Wild Man reveals the work of 10 contemporary artists who cast their gaze upon these two symbolic figures and their intersecting paths, through a wondrous journey into the universe of a forest, the realm of the witch and the wild man.

More than 130 works are on display (painting, drawing, photography, illustration, sculpture).

They question the creation of narrative, the birth of archetypes and representations, and re-examine ever-shifting boundaries: between nature and culture, human and animal, fiction and reality, man and woman.

Alongside the exhibition, a wide array of mediation events and workshops are on offer: performance-based tours echoing the artworks in the exhibition by the circus company Libertivore, playful and sensory tours...

An associated programme will allow audiences in Marseille to discover all the shows that previously delighted young and old alike across the department's municipalities.

Complete with new surprises: Nights of Reading centered around witches and wild men, shadow puppetry, events for early childhood, cabaret, and to cap it all off, the great witches' round! We look forward to welcoming you throughout this vibrant new year!
