Pollen is the third in a series of collection narratives, following Le Tour du jour en quatre-vingts mondes and Amour Systémique.
Through a selection of recent and historical works, Pollen reflects on our relationship with our environments—particularly natural ones—and their organisms: plant, animal, and mineral alike.
The Pollen exhibition asks whether the experience of art can help us look at our environment better, or at least enable us to view it—and therefore conceive of it—"differently".
This question becomes all the more pressing at a time when the multitude of scientific discourse and journalistic and documentary production concerning contemporary ecological crises seems to have had limited impact on collective awareness.
So, what modes of storytelling can change our relationships with nature? What forms can simultaneously help de-center our perspectives on our worlds and reactivate our ways of existing within it?
The exhibition's title refers to the work Hazelnut Pollen (1992) by the German artist Wolfgang Laib. This work, composed of hazelnut pollen as the title suggests, harvested by the artist, has changed color since its first exhibition.
The presence of this "pure" natural material within the collections raises questions regarding its instability, but also because it can still potentially attract insects.
While Wolfgang Laib's gesture is imbued with deep respect for nature, or even a form of spirituality, it could also—at first glance—be considered a form of extraction.
