Exposition solo « Reliefs » : Sophie Bloch

Between forms, a space of transformation For her second solo exhibition at LooLooLook Gallery, after Bleu in 2023, Sophie Bloch presents Reliefs, a new stage in her research around ultramarine.

For several years, the artist has explored blue as a space rather than as a simple colour. In her paintings, it hollows out, rises, shifts. The surface becomes the site of continuous movement, on the border between real and imagined landscape.

The series Vagues, Ondes, Mégalithes and Cimes bear witness to this evolution. A liquid form can gradually become mass, then relief; what seemed to belong to the world of water ends up evoking the mountain.

Depth becomes wave, the wave becomes swell, the swell becomes mass, the mass becomes peak. It is within this transformation that the meaning of the title Reliefs lies: a geographical relief, but also a relief of the material echoing an inner depth.

With Sophie Bloch, the landscape does not precede the painting; it appears through it. The brush moves through the oil, leaves streaks, hollows out certain areas, covers others. The gesture remains perceptible and gives the surface an almost tactile presence.

Starting from ultramarine, the artist brings forth a range of shades running from deep blue to violet, from cobalt to black. Light then alters this perception. Depending on where one stands before the canvas, certain forms appear while others disappear.

A mountain may seem to rise out of a wave; a depth may open within a surface one believed to be flat. The works therefore do not immediately reveal their landscape. They ask the eye to take its time.
