L’habitat social dans la métropole bordelaise

Ensemble(s) 1890-2010

How to decently house all the inhabitants of the Bordeaux metropolis? This is the challenge that has had to be met since the mid-19th century. The population grew steadily to meet the needs of the Industrial Revolution.

Social housing gradually became a fully fledged public policy.

Over time, through housing estates, detached houses, subdivisions, apartment buildings and large housing complexes, this multiform social housing — a true laboratory of ideas — has shaped the territory of the metropolis and, beyond that, the living environment of its residents.

Rich in documents, films, scale models and objects, this exhibition retraces 120 years of social, architectural and urban history in the Bordeaux metropolis, from the 19th-century working-class estate to 21st-century eco-districts.

As a contemporary counterpoint, the Palabras association presents an artistic production highlighting the testimonies of residents from the now-transformed Châtaigneraie district in Pessac.

Guided tours of the exhibition take place on Fridays at 2 pm for individuals and by appointment for groups. Reservations are compulsory. Tel. fr
