Overview
Come and discuss with Pierre-Olivier Dittmar, senior lecturer at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, about his book: L'invention de l'animal. Essai d'anthropologie médiévale (Gallimard, 2026).
In the Middle Ages, the notion of the "animal" as a category distinct from human beings did not yet exist. This book explores how the way living beings were regarded evolved through religion, art, food and representations, and shows how the separation between humans and animals was gradually constructed.
A discussion led by Elisabeth Plas, senior lecturer in the Department of French and Latin Literature and Linguistics at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle.
