For director Simon Stone, adept at reinscribing works in our everyday lives, Violetta Valéry is not that courtesan who sells her body, as in Alexandre Dumas fils's time, whose "The Lady of the Camellias" inspired Giuseppe Verdi's opera.
She is a social media diva who monetises her image through "selfies" and "likes". But this hyperconnected world does not prevent the beauty, as in the nineteenth century, from having to sacrifice her love for Alfredo on the altar of morality.
This contemporary reading aligns with Verdi's intentions who, while composing feverish and virtuoso music, criticises the brutality of a society of appearance, a machine that grinds down individualities. Especially when they are women who aspire to be free.
