Synopsis: Michel, Jeannine, Fanfan, Rustem and Eliane each run a small business in Paris and share a visceral attachment to their neighbourhood and its residents, alongside an almost romantic relationship with their trade. Whether a hair salon, haberdashery, restaurant or bookshop, these small businesses—not strictly "profitable" in the traditional sense—generate vitality and serve as spaces for advice and discussion. As privileged observers of the social and architectural transformations of their neighbourhoods, they now embody a vanishing Paris.
