Overview

Photography after the image, by Evelyne Cohen and Michel Poivert. Based on the work of thirteen contemporary artists, the NEO-ANALOG exhibition presents itself as the manifesto of an international movement marking one of the most recent stages in contemporary photography.

Since the 2010s, certain photographers within the field of contemporary art have turned away from image creation to explore the materiality of photography. The fundamentals – light, time, photosensitive substances, the tangibility of supports, etc.

  • present themselves as an alternative vocabulary in the face of advanced technologies.

As "counter-cultural" proposals, because they are foreign to the mainstream of media images, the photographs assert the potentialities of the analogue, meaning any experimentation in direct engagement – in contact – with reality.

It is no longer a question of "a look at", but of the activation of processes where the physics and chemistry of materials unfold new possibilities.

Often imbued with a strong ecosophic sensitivity, neo-analogue photographers also campaign for practices that explore nature alongside scientists, aiming for an anthropic poetry: in a damaged world, photography no longer serves merely to see, but to feel and understand.

Analogue is thus no longer a technical question, but a cultural paradigm shift: the photographer's contact with the world comes through the recognition of the values of experience.

Devalued since the development of the media, experience is making a strong comeback through analogue culture and constitutes a balance with our digital lives. Neo-analogue photography revisits the history of the medium by reactivating processes.

It invents new technical situations, escaping its condition as an image: bridging installation, sculpture, printmaking, painting or video, photography has expanded by regenerating the fundamentals of its medium. L
