Overview
The New Year's Eve fireworks of 31 December 2025 over the Arc de Triomphe offered a first glimpse of it… In 2026, Paris and Rome will blow out the 70 candles of their twinning, unique in the world. A closer look at the highlights planned.
“Solo Parigi è degna di Roma, solo Roma è degna di Parigi”: “Only Paris is worthy of Rome; only Rome is worthy of Paris”. That is the motto of the twinning through which the French and Italian capitals chose to symbolically join their destinies on 30 January 1956. 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of this exclusive twinning, which the two cities wish to celebrate together: on 29 January in Rome and then on 30 January in Paris, with official ceremonies held in the presence of the mayors of both cities, as well as a cultural programme rolled out in both cities throughout 2026. These cultural and commemorative events, in some cases the fruit of collaboration between major Parisian and Roman institutions, will shed light on the artistic richness of Rome and Paris, and on the ways in which the two capitals have drawn inspiration from one another over the centuries.
Highlights in Paris
From 7 to 12 April: ITALISSIMO, the traditional festival of Italian literature and culture, will celebrate the twinning by bringing writers, artists and works from the two capitals into dialogue;
From 2 to 6 July: the Dolcevita sur Seine festival will this year offer a great celebration of cinema, with exceptional artists and guests, along with its large open-air cinema.
Exhibitions devoted to Rome will also open in February on the railings of the Hôtel de Ville and along the banks of the Seine. Other events offered by several institutions or cultural organisations, such as the Institut Culturel italien, la Cie Flies, l'Atelier de Paris, and others, will be unveiled shortly!
