Projection: indomptables , une histoire de femmes libres

1936-2026: The association 24 août 1944 invites you to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the popular uprising against European fascism. Long before July 1936, the Spanish people, committed to their revolutionary struggle, had organised themselves to defend their aspirations to a more just society. Libertarian women did not sit idle. They organised themselves to reconcile their own aspirations with the defence of demands common to all.

In Madrid, in April 1936, Lucía Sánchez, Saornil, Amparo Poch y Gascón, Mercedes Comaposada Guillén and Consuelo Berges created the magazine of the same name for Mujeres libres (MMLL), a libertarian movement.

The Madrid group drew closer to the Catalan group Cultural femenina, based in Barcelona, and together they founded the Mujeres libres federation, which spread throughout republican Spain.

They took part in the fight against the putschist military while claiming to act on their own destiny. They championed a humanist and anti-capitalist society. Workers, mothers or prostitutes, they fought for their emancipation.

After the war, they would continue their commitment, rebuilding their organisation in exile. The screening will be followed by a debate led by Hélène Hernandez, author and presenter of the programme Femmes libres on Radio Libertaire.
