Overview

Echoing the exhibition "Jean Dupas & Co. Le grand Art déco" presented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, the Archives de Bordeaux Métropole retrace the footsteps of this art

Jean Dupas was born in Bordeaux in 1882 in the family home on Cours Journu Aubert. He was the third child in the family. From his years in Bordeaux, the archives make it possible to retrace his life as an art student, from his entry into the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux until his recognition in 1910 when, as winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome competition, he was awarded the Premier Grand Prix, his life as a mobilized citizen in 1914, and his life as an internationally renowned artist returning to Bordeaux in 1937, notably with the commission for an allegorical poster of Bordeaux.

It was also in 1937 that Jean Dupas received a commission to create a decorative scheme for the Bourse du Travail in Bordeaux. This major building, designed by the City's chief architect, Jacques d’Welles, at the request of Mayor Adrien Marquet, was intended to house trade unions as well as a conference centre. Its architecture sought to reconcile industry and craftsmanship by combining functionality and prestigious decoration. An emblematic achievement of the 1930s, the Bourse du Travail is part of the emergence of Art Deco architecture in the metropolitan area, of which the archives also bear witness.

Thus, the exhibition looks back at a few key events in this artist's journey and places Jean Dupas's art within a territorial perspective.
