Destierro

Between 1974 and 1984, 3,500 Chilean dissidents took refuge in Ceau?escu's Romania. A poignant and little-known history of exile, which is also that of the playwright and director Daniela Labbé Cabrera. Drawing together the loosened threads of her own diaspora, she weaves a vibrant narrative at the crossroads of fiction and documentary. From one dictatorship to another... Fleeing threats and persecution, opponents of General Pinochet's regime find an unlikely refuge in the grey suburbs of Bucharest... Between struggle and discouragement, joy and survival, they recreate 'a little Chilean village in Romania'. It is their epic that Destierro recounts, a fictional and documented journey that follows the singular destinies of four characters caught up in the whirlwind of twentieth-century history. Among them are Anna, an activist whose exile will profoundly upend her destiny, and Nelson, who seeks to pursue the revolutionary struggle from Europe.

An epic narrative tinged with South American magic realism, sustained by music played and sung on stage, a force of life and resistance.
