Overview
Contemporary jazz — Jakob Dreyer, New York bassist, unveils his third album with a dazzling quartet, blending swing and creativity in an electrifying atmosphere.
With Roots and Things, bassist and composer Jakob Dreyer opens a new chapter in his artistic journey. Based in New York since 2014, he unveils his third album as leader, a project carried by communicative energy, an affirmed taste for swing, and a new sonic palette.
After the two volumes of Songs, Hymns and Ballads, Dreyer brings together here a remarkable quartet composed of vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, tenor saxophonist Pennicott, and drummer Salters.
Together, they bring to life 15 original compositions as well as a cover revisited with freshness and personality.
Conceived as a musical journey rich in contrasts, Roots and Things alternates energetic pieces, engaging grooves, contemplative ballads, and brief interludes that punctuate listening.
The vibraphone, at the heart of this new adventure, brings a luminous and singular colour that immediately distinguishes the album from its predecessors. From the opening notes of "The Fifth Floor" and "Constellation", the band displays remarkable cohesion.
Other pieces like "June Tune", "Downtime", or "Fight or Flight" illustrate the diversity of atmospheres and richness of Dreyer's writing, always guided by sense of melody and interaction.
With Roots and Things, Jakob Dreyer signs an album both elegant, lively, and deeply rooted in jazz tradition, while asserting a resolutely personal voice. Line-up: Jakob Dreyer: bass; Tivon Pennicott: tenor saxophone; Sasha Berliner: Vibraphone; Kenneth Salters: Drums.
