Overview
In 1730, in the newly founded Kingdom of Prussia and its new capital, Berlin, the soldier king Frederick William imposes his martial excess on the entire state and rules by terror within his own family.
Things can only go badly between a father who cares only for war and hunting, and a son who wants only to play the flute and read French poets. Faced with the king's growing brutality, the young Prince Frederick finds allies in his elder sister Mine, his confidante since childhood, and in a dashing officer of the royal guard, Hans-Hermann von Katte, with whom he falls in love.
The Prussian king's hostility towards his son will erupt into a political crisis when he discovers the prince's love for Katte.
