Kintsugi

Kintsugi is a show for 4 hip-hop dancers and a musician. It draws inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi.

After Ikebana, presented in 2023, choreographer Thô Anothaï continues his exploration of traditional Japanese arts with his 8th piece, Kintsugi, which means "golden joinery" in Japanese.

This art involves restoring broken objects by gluing the pieces back together with a gold-dust preparation, to make them even more beautiful. In the show, this approach is transposed onto the bodies of the four dancers.

Set against electronic music accompanied by a taiko musician, it is the bodies themselves that take centre stage. On an immaculate white carpet, a golden square represents the priceless inner strength of every human being.

The performers first move together in a neutral walk, following precise paths. Little by little, this mechanism breaks down: cracks and fractures come to disrupt the rhythm of their movements until it comes to a halt.

Through popping and breaking techniques, the bodies come undone. Each individual movement finds unity and beauty again in the assembly of a shared puzzle.
