Kwame Akoto. Almighty God Art Works

The exhibition looks back at the journey of Kwame Akoto, a major figure in the Ghanaian art scene, whose unique work combines popular painting and spiritual commitment.

Ghanaian artist and pastor, Kwame Akoto stands out for his unique journey. In 1972, he opened his studio in Kumasi, where he began as a sign painter, but he quickly broke free from commercial commissions to develop a personal universe blending faith, social critique, and humour.

Rooted in local life, his work is also marked by a committed vision of the world. Under the name Almighty God, he is a preacher and a respected figure in his neighbourhood. In his studio, Almighty God Art Works, he creates striking images where text plays an essential role.

His works combine moralising slogans, spiritual messages, and scenes from daily life, in a direct and straightforward style. The painter also frequently stages himself in self-portraits questioning the status of the creator.

The exhibition pays tribute to this major figure of the contemporary West African art scene. It explores his favourite themes and highlights the influences, encounters – notably with artist Hervé Di Rosa – and convictions that have shaped his unique artistic approach.

The exhibition benefits from the support of the French Embassy and the Institut Français in Ghana, as part of the "Création Africa" programme.
