La dame de la mer

The play is set in summer on the edge of a fjord in Norway, where the blended family of Doctor Wangel lives with his two daughters from a first marriage, Bolette and Hilde, both of whom are seeking emancipation.

In a daily ritual, Ellida, La Dame de la mer, goes swimming until the day when « l'Etranger  », a sailor who disappeared and with whom she is bound by a secret pact, returns… The family's fragile balance begins to waver and confronts Ellida with an existential choice.

This play, first staged in 1888, offers a score that is highly relevant today on the questions of individual freedom, the liberation of speech and the affirmation of the feminine. Dramaturgy by Alain Batis, Jean-Louis Besson.
