Overview
Written in 1954 by Violette Leduc and long censored, the text Thérèse et Isabelle traces the absolute passion of two teenage girls in a boarding school. A poetic language conveys female sensuality and lesbian desire.
Thérèse and Isabelle are two young women who discover love and physical pleasure in the boarding school of a college in northern France. Over three nights, Thérèse – the narrator and alter ego of Violette Leduc – learns about pleasure with Isabelle before being discovered and separated from her "amie" by the scandalised adults.
Staging Thérèse et Isabelle is no small undertaking. First, it means bringing to the stage a language that still seems, even today, unprecedented. A refined language that speaks of love and the power of desire at a time when it is still dangerous to do so. A language that Simone de Beauvoir described as "restrained audacity". Directed by Marie Fortuit, with Louise Chevillotte, Raphaëlle Rousseau, Marine Helmlinger and Lucie Sansen. (The young person's rate is for those under 26.)
