Angelin Preljocaj

Angelin Preljocaj, born on 19 January 1957 in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne), is a French contemporary dancer and choreographer. His choreographic work is deeply steeped in the history of classical ballet, while remaining resolutely contemporary. Added to the repertoire of the Paris Opera Ballet in the early 1990s, Angelin Preljocaj has directed the Preljocaj company since 1985; it was later renamed Ballet Preljocaj in 1996 when it relocated to Aix-en-Provence, and it has been based at the Pavillon Noir in Aix-en-Provence, inaugurated in 2006. He is regarded as one of the most important choreographers, frequently combining original formal research with collaborations with numerous other contemporary artists from all backgrounds, without straying entirely from the classical ballet tradition.

In 2022, during France's presidency of the Council of the European Union, France asked Angelin Preljocaj to create Danse l'Europe!, a participatory choreography that guides participants orally. The soundtrack is available free of charge in the EU's 24 official languages, and was composed by French artist Jeanne Added.
