About — The artist

Curtis Lee Mayfield, born on 3 June 1942 in Chicago and died on 26 December 1999 in Roswell, Georgia, was a musician, singer, author and composer of soul, funk and rhythm and blues, best known for the soundtrack of the blaxploitation film Superfly and for his song Move On Up.

He first belonged to the group The Impressions, then launched a successful solo career. He is probably the first singer of the new African-American wave to introduce socially conscious commentary into his songs. This committed music became very popular during the period of social hardship in the 1960s and 1970s.
