About — The artist
Ruth Lee Jones, known by her stage name Dinah Washington, born on 29 August 1924 in Tuscaloosa (Alabama) and died on 14 December 1963 in Detroit (Michigan), was an American blues, jazz, and gospel singer and pianist. Her powerful and emotion-filled voice earned her the nickname “The Queen of the Blues”.
Dinah Washington remains a source of inspiration for a great number of singers, notably Etta James and Aretha Franklin. She was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
