About — The artist

The Original Dixieland Jass Band, later renamed the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB), was a Dixieland jazz group that made many of the very first jazz recordings in 1917. Their piece "Livery Stable Blues" became the first jazz record ever issued. The group composed and recorded many jazz standards, the most famous being "Tiger Rag". At the end of 1917, the spelling of the name was changed to Original Dixieland Jazz Band.

The original members were Nick LaRocca (cornet), Eddie Edwards (trombone), Larry Shields (clarinet), Henry Ragas (piano) and Tony Sbarbaro (drums). Several of them had previously played in bands led by New Orleans musician Papa Jack Laine. By the end of 1917, the group had adopted the spelling "Jazz" in its name.

The ODJB presented itself as "the Creators of Jazz". It was the first group to record jazz commercially and to achieve chart success in the genre. Bandleader and cornettist Nick LaRocca maintained that the ODJB deserved recognition as the first group to record jazz commercially and the first to establish jazz as an idiom or musical genre.

The original quintet separated in 1926. Ten years later, Nick LaRocca brought together most of its members to form a new swing band including former ODJB members. The full quintet reformed in 1936 to great acclaim, and finally dissolved in 1938.
