About — The artist

Nouhad Haddad (نهاد حداد), known as Faïrouz, Fairouz, Feyrouz or Fayrouz (Arabic: فيروز), is a Lebanese singer, born on 21 November 1934 in Beirut. She is considered one of the divas of modern Arabic music. Her style is essentially characterised by a mix of Middle Eastern and Western music. She also draws inspiration from Byzantine and Maronite music, traditional Arabic chanting, symphonic music, opera, Latin music, and jazz from the 1980s onwards.

Her stage name, also transcribed Fairouz or Fayrouz, means “turquoise” in Arabic.

With the Rahbani brothers, Assy and Mansour (Assy would become her husband), she created a new style of Lebanese music initially heavily influenced by Latin music.

Her first public concert took place in 1967. She quickly became famous throughout the Arab world but made rare appearances during the Lebanese civil war to avoid being used by one side or another. This restraint earned her the affection and interest of the public of all faiths.

Her long career, international successes, and unique style make her “the greatest Arab star of all time”.
