About — The artist
Free were a British blues rock band formed in London in 1968 by Paul Rodgers on vocals and guitar, Paul Kossoff on guitar, Andy Fraser on bass and piano, and Simon Kirke on drums. The group split up in 1973, and its members went on to pursue different paths; the singer, Paul Rodgers, went on to form Bad Company. Free's musical style, largely influenced by the blues, helped drive the evolution of 1960s rock, from blues rock towards hard rock, on a par with groups such as Cream or Led Zeppelin.
Rolling Stone regards the band's members as "the British pioneers of hard rock." The magazine ranks Rodgers 55th on its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", and Kossoff is placed 51st on its list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
