About — The artist

Hugues Aufray, born Hugues Auffray on 18 August 1929 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Seine), is a French singer-songwriter, guitarist, and sculptor.

A major figure in French chanson, he is famous for his poetically inspired songs exploring themes of travel, friendship, and fraternity, as well as for his French adaptations of Bob Dylan's songs, whom he met during his stay in New York in the early 1960s.

Over a career spanning more than sixty-five years, he has recorded 39 albums, including 31 studio albums, as well as 75 singles. Among his most famous titles are Santiano, Stewball, Céline, Le Petit Âne gris, Hasta Luego, and Adieu monsieur le professeur.

Upon the death of Marcel Amont in March 2023, he became the oldest active male artist in French chanson.
