Kino (Russian: Кино, lit. 'cinema' [kʲɪˈno]) was a Soviet rock band of the 1980s.

Formed in 1981 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Kino became, thanks to the charisma of its singer and songwriter Viktor Tsoï, the flagship band of the late Soviet Union.

Viktor Tsoï's songs reflected the concerns of Soviet youth at the time: love songs, rebellion against the adult world, ecological concerns, small scenes from everyday life. The lyrics are of a great simplicity that moved many listeners. The band's later albums adopted a darker tone, and the influence of British new wave bands could be felt on some songs.

Tsoï also appeared in several films.

In 1986, with Aquarium, Alissa, and Strannye Igri, Kino recorded the historic album Red Wave in the United States, marking the entry of Soviet rock onto the international scene.

The band broke up after Viktor Tsoï's death on 15 August 1990 in a car accident (he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel), marking one of the last tragic destinies of 20th-century Russian music.

His popularity is still very high in Russian-speaking countries, and his persona is even the subject of a kind of idolatry, notably with the creation of the Tsoï Wall in old Arbat in the historic heart of Moscow, where fans from all former Soviet Republics still gather today.

The band Kino and its singer are the main characters in Kirill Serebrennikov's Russian film, Leto, released in 2018.
