About — The artist

Lauryn Hill is an American-Beninese hip-hop and RnB singer, rapper, singer-songwriter, producer, and actress, born on 26 May 1975 in East Orange, New Jersey. She was a member of the group Fugees.

Raised in South Orange, New Jersey, she began singing with her family. She enjoyed success as a singer at a young age, frequently appearing in a soap opera called As the World Turns and in the film Sister Act 2. In high school, she met Pras Michel, with whom she started a group, later joined by her friend, Wyclef Jean. They renamed themselves the Fugees and released two albums, Blunted on Reality in 1994 and The Score in 1996. The latter sold over 6 million copies in the United States.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, released in 1998, remains the singer's only solo album to date. In it, she recounts her life in the neo-soul genre. The album was very well received by the specialised press and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 8 million copies in the United States. It features the singles Doo Wop (That Thing) (also ranked number one), Ex-Factor, and Everything Is Everything. Thanks to the album, she won five awards at the 41st Grammy Awards.

Soon after, Lauryn Hill's popularity grew due to her success, and she continued performing, giving interviews, and releasing songs. Her last album, the live MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 released in 2002, divided the specialised press and sold poorly compared to her first. The singer then appeared occasionally on tour.

In 2015, Lauryn Hill appeared on the album Nina Revisited A Tribute to Nina Simone.
