About — The artist
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (15 August 1925 – 23 December 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. A virtuoso regarded as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, Peterson released more than 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards as well as a Recording Academy lifetime achievement award, and received numerous other awards and honors. He gave thousands of concerts around the world over a career spanning more than 60 years. Duke Ellington nicknamed him the “Maharaja of the keyboard.”
He considered his 1953–1958 trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis to be the “most stimulating” and productive setting for public performances and studio recordings. He also worked solo, as an accompanist, and in duos and trios with Sam Jones, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Joe Pass, Irving Ashby, Count Basie and Herbie Hancock.
Peterson won eight Grammy Awards between 1975 and 1997. He is regarded as among the finest jazz pianists and improvisers of the 20th century.
