About — The artist
Scaramouche, op. 165b, is a suite for two pianos by Darius Milhaud, written in July 1937 at the request of his piano teacher Marguerite Long, who wanted a new short, lively piece for her former pupils Marcelle Meyer and Ida Jankelevitch to perform at the International Exhibition. Milhaud drew on elements of a recent incidental music, op. 165, first composed in May 1937 for Molière's Le Médecin volant and performed by the Scaramouche theatre on the avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris. This was the music for a play by his friend Charles Vildrac, a children's adaptation of Molière's play. Milhaud took from it the title of the new composition as well as the first and last movements, while he borrowed the second movement from Bolivar (op. 148, 1935), incidental music for an opera by Jules Supervielle. The suite was a great success, and Milhaud made an arrangement for alto saxophone and orchestra in 1939 (op. 165c), followed by a version for clarinet and orchestra in 1941 (op. 165d).
