About — The artist

The Théâtre du Soleil is a theatre company founded in 1964 as a cooperative and participatory company (scop) by Ariane Mnouchkine, Philippe Léotard, Jean-Claude Penchenat, Roberto Moscoso, Françoise Tournafond and Claude Forget, among others.

Mnouchkine founded the company after studying under Jacques Lecoq. It was then a young, cosmopolitan troupe which, in 1970, settled in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, in disused warehouses that soon became a new theatre venue: this site was the former cartridge factory (cartoucherie) in the Bois de Vincennes; 'La Cartoucherie' naturally became the name and sign of the venue, where other companies soon came to settle as well.

Thus, the 'Théâtre du Soleil' also refers to one of the theatre halls at La Cartoucherie, which specifically houses this company.
