About — The artist

Zoot was an Australian pop rock group formed in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1964 under the name Down the Line. It took the name Zoot in 1967 and relocated to Melbourne in 1968. It reached the top five on the national Go-Set chart with a hard rock cover of the Beatles ballad “Eleanor Rigby,” released in 1970, before disbanding in May 1971.

Its core members were Beeb Birtles on bass, who went on to found Little River Band in 1975, and Darryl Cotton on vocals, who later became a solo artist and then a television presenter. Their guitarist and singer-songwriter, Rick Springfield, a member from 1969 to 1971, relocated to the United States in 1972 and achieved international fame there as a solo artist, songwriter and actor. Zoot reformed for the Rick Springfield and Friends cruise in November 2011. Darryl Cotton, diagnosed with liver cancer in May 2012, died in July 2012.
