About — The venue

The Tour Jean-sans-Peur, or Jean sans Peur Tower, is a fortification tower built in Paris in the 15th century by Duke John I of Burgundy, known as “Jean sans Peur” (John the Fearless). It is located at 20, rue Étienne-Marcel, in the 2nd arrondissement.

It is the last remaining vestige of the Dukes of Burgundy’s hôtel (mansion).

The hôtel, built against the wall of Philippe Auguste, had been constructed by Robert II d'Artois at the end of the 13th century. It then became the property of the Dukes of Burgundy by inheritance until the death of Charles the Bold in 1477.

King François I offered the eastern part of the domain, including the Tour Jean-sans-Peur, to Diegue de Mandosse. This is why the tower was sometimes called “hôtel de Mandosse”.

The hôtel fell into disuse. It was rediscovered in 1866-1868 during the construction of rue Étienne-Marcel. It was then classified as a historical monument by a decree on September 29, 1884, and subsequently restored in 1893.

Since 1999, the tower has been open to the public.
