Otis Ray Redding, nato il 9 settembre 1941 a Dawson (Georgia) e morto il 10 dicembre 1967 in un incidente aereo nel lago Monona (Wisconsin), è un cantante afroamericano di musica soul e rhythm and blues, profondamente radicata nella cultura statunitense, una musica universale. A questo riguardo, gode di una straordinaria popolarità in tutto il mondo, come testimoniano le numerose cover, sia durante la sua vita sia postume, realizzate da artisti di provenienze molto diverse: dai Rolling Stones ad Aretha Franklin, passando per Etta James, i Moody Blues, il Golden Gate Quartet, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Johnny Hallyday, Eddy Mitchell, Michael Bolton, i Black Crowes, Seal o Papa Wemba. Diversi artisti di fama gli hanno inoltre reso omaggio in canzoni, come Eddie Floyd (Big Bird), Wilson Pickett (Cole, Cooke & Redding), Arthur Conley (Otis Sleep On), The Doors (Runnin' Blue), Paul Young (Now I Know What Made Otis Blue), Magma (Otis), Jay-Z e Kanye West (Otis), eccetera.
