About — The artist

Otis Ray Redding, born September 9, 1941 in Dawson, Georgia and died December 10, 1967 in a plane crash in Lake Monona, Wisconsin, was an African American soul and rhythm and blues singer, deeply rooted in American culture, a universal music. In this regard, he enjoyed remarkable popularity throughout the world as evidenced by the numerous covers, during his lifetime or posthumously, by artists from diverse backgrounds: from the Rolling Stones to Aretha Franklin, passing through Etta James, the Moody Blues, the Golden Gate Quartet, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Johnny Hallyday, Eddy Mitchell, Michael Bolton, the Black Crowes, Seal, or Papa Wemba. Several renowned artists have also paid tribute to him in song such as Eddie Floyd (Big Bird), Wilson Pickett (Cole, Cooke & Redding), Arthur Conley (Otis Sleep On), The Doors (Runnin' Blue), Paul Young (Now I Know What Made Otis Blue), Magma (Otis), Jay-Z and Kanye West (Otis), etc.
