Concert Commémoratif des Funérailles de Chopin à la Madeleine 1849

Chopin decided, together with those around him, that Mozart's Requiem would be performed at his funeral at the Église de la Madeleine.

At eleven o'clock in the morning on 30 October 1849, three thousand people filled the church, which was entirely draped in black. While the coffin was brought up from the crypt, an orchestra played the Marche funèbre de Chopin in an arrangement by Napoléon Reber.

The organist Louis Lefébure-Wély then played the Préludes in E minor and in B minor. At the end of the ceremony, Mozart's Requiem rang out, performed by the orchestra and choirs of the Société de concerts du Conservatoire, conducted by Narcisse Girard, with soloists Pauline Viardot and Luigi Lablache.
